FUNDRAISING FOR "ON THE BEACH"... Hold up, coming July 1

I believe it's very important to document the disaster happening in the gulf and I'm about to start with my fundraising. I'll post the link as soon as it's live.
The other project I want to get started on asap is Nogales/Nogales but I have to learn Spanish before I go. My Spanish is terrible despite my efforts to get a bare minimum.

It's time sensitive too, so I should probably get cracking on how I can begin.

Arizona School Demands Black/Latino Faces On Mural Be Whitened

About to start fundraising for "On The Beach," going to LA, AL and FL to document where people are waiting for oil landfall, as well as documenting places where the oil has made landfall already. The finished project will be a small self-published book of approximately 30 photographs.

What?

greg_2892_3 web

greg couple_2914 web

I've been feeling a little out of sorts with the end of 95, overwhelmed with things I've put off and not use to not having a structure in place for work. That's of course what I'm working on now, the structure for "Cognate," which won't be called "Cognate" when the final structure is in effect.

I went out and shot today, to keep in shape for my upcoming projects, and I met Greg, a sweet kid with a pacemaker. Thank G-d I did because I needed it and I needed to talk to someone, a stranger, to help find my way a little bit. Greg is living in a house I've visited before but I've never met him before... I know Linda, who asked me twice if my wife wasn't worried about my going into stranger's homes. Where does the apostrophe go there? Before or after the s? Stranger's or strangers'?

I'm excited to move on, new equipment, new format, new structure. I have no idea how I'm going to make this new project happen, but I'll be damned if I don't blow it out of the water like I'm Helen of Bikini. I think I need a few more months before I can get the basis structure down. I'm certain I'm on the right track though.

Of the books I'm certain of, the two I want to work on RIGHT NOW are "To This Year In Jerusalem" and "San Andreas Fault Life." I'm DYING to make these books, and all the ancillary pieces that go with them. I'm certain I'm done with 95.

Here's to Greg, thanks for your time and your thoughts.

"Instead of trying to sleep I try to fathom the mystery of this suburb at dawn. Why do these splendid houses look so defeated at this hour of the day? Other houses, say a 'dobe house in New Mexico or an old frame house in Feliciana, look much the same day or night. But these new houses look haunted."

For I-95 I used:

"never odd or even," "star comedy by democrats" and "are we not drawn onward, we few, drawn onward to new era?"

as phrases to help me with the structure of the project.

----

Now I'm working on Latin as something to help structure the book project. As of rIght now the working title for the project is "Cognate," which I'm fairly sure won't be the umbrella title for the project, but it will help with the structuring.

For Cognate:

e pluribus unum - From many, one
ex unus, plures- out of one , many more

unus quod idem eadem idem- one and the same

----

mare liberum et clausum - An open and closed sea

----

ab hinc - From here on

a priori - From what comes before

ibidem - In the same place

ad vitam paramus - We are preparing for life

ad vitam - For life

quae vide - See these things

inter spem et metum - Between hope and fear

inter nos - Between ourselves

de rervm natvra/ rerum natura - On the nature of things

in rervm natvra/ rerum natura - In the nature of things

fons et origo - The source and origin

fortitudine vincimus - By endurance we conquer

inter alios - amongst other people

nos es messiahs- we are the harvest

in esse - In existence

in saecvla saecvlorvm - For ages of ages forever

in statu quo - In the same state

in transitu - In passing, on the way

in vacuo - In a vacuum or empty space

commoror terra- inhabited land

panton, alicubi- everything, everywhere

sic passim - Thus everywhere

inter nos - Between ourselves

inter spem et metum - Between hope and fear

locus in quo - The place in which something happens

manus in mano - Hand in hand

spiritus lenis et spiritus asper- rough breathing and smooth breathing

res ipsa loquitur -- the thing speaks for itself

-----

curriculum vitae - The course of one's life

June 19, 1953 : Rosenbergs Executed

On this day in 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were convicted of conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviets, are executed at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York. Both refused to admit any wrongdoing and proclaimed their innocence right up to the time of their deaths, by the electric chair. The Rosenbergs were the first U.S. citizens to be convicted and executed for espionage during peacetime and their case remains controversial to this day.

Julius Rosenberg was an engineer for the U.S. Army Signal Corps who was born in New York on May 12, 1918. His wife, born Ethel Greenglass, also in New York, on September 28, 1915, worked as a secretary. The couple met as members of the Young Communist League, married in 1939 and had two sons. Julius Rosenberg was arrested on suspicion of espionage on June 17, 1950, and accused of heading a spy ring that passed top-secret information concerning the atomic bomb to the Soviet Union. Ethel was arrested two months later. The Rosenbergs were implicated by David Greenglass, Ethel's younger brother and a former army sergeant and machinist at Los Alamos, the secret atomic bomb lab in New Mexico. Greenglass, who himself had confessed to providing nuclear secrets to the Soviets through an intermediary, testified against his sister and brother-in-law in court. He later served 10 years in prison.

The Rosenbergs vigorously protested their innocence, but after a brief trial that began on March 6, 1951, and attracted much media attention, the couple was convicted. On April 5, 1951, a judge sentenced them to death and the pair was taken to Sing Sing to await execution.

During the next two years, the couple became the subject of both national and international debate. Some people believed that the Rosenbergs were the victims of a surge of hysterical anti-communist feeling in the United States, and protested that the death sentence handed down was cruel and unusual punishment. Many Americans, however, believed that the Rosenbergs had been dealt with justly. They agreed with President Dwight D. Eisenhower when he issued a statement declining to invoke executive clemency for the pair. He stated, "I can only say that, by immeasurably increasing the chances of atomic war, the Rosenbergs may have condemned to death tens of millions of innocent people all over the world. The execution of two human beings is a grave matter. But even graver is the thought of the millions of dead whose deaths may be directly attributable to what these spies have done."

Zoe Strauss Bio

Writing a bio blows. Here's my new one...

Zoe Strauss, born 1970, is an installation artist and photographer living and working in Philadelphia, PA. Strauss recently completed “Under I-95,” a 10 year long project that culminated in an installation of photographs under interstate 95 in South Philadelphia. She has exhibited in the 2006 Whitney Biennial, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia ICA and had two solo shows at Bruce Silverstein Gallery. In 2005, Ms. Strauss was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts and in 2007 she was awarded a USA Gund Fellowship. Her first monograph, America, was published in 2008.

Ms. Strauss is the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Public Art Project.

alloyed

or

cognate

Both get at what I'm thinking about, but I'm disturbed by the inclusion of "debased or sub par" in almost all of the definitions of alloyed.

And with cognate... I'm thinking of the linguistic definition "descended from the same language or form" but I'm not sold on the word. I'm looking for a more common word but don't know if I'll be able to find one with meanings about relations and origin.

"There are five types of sememes: two denotational and three connotational, with connotational occurring only in phrase units (they do not reflect the denotation)

Denotational 1: Primary denotation, for example "head" (body);

Denotational 2: Secondary denotation by resemblance with other denotation: "head" (ship);

Connotational 1: High position, as the role or function of "head" in the operation of the human body;

Connotational 2: Emotive, e.g., meaning in "honey";

Connotational 3: Evaluative, e.g., meaning in "sneak" – move silently and secretly for a bad purpose"

Foxconn Suicides

Working on a new structure for the next couple of years. I'm planning to keep the blog until 2012, when there will be a show about I-95. It seems right to keep up a sort of transparency through the process of the exhibition planning, but I'm thinking that I'm going to archive this and start a new one.

I though that I'd like to shoot this week, but I was kind of thinking, "what for?" It's a little aimless to me. I'll play it by ear.

Battle Royale at the Riverview

Ted Passon make a 5 minute documentatry about me and it's screening at the Riverview before Ironman... and it's free! It's got something to do with Ford because the documentary required me and the film crew to drive around in a Ford.

A total highlight was when this awesome group of people just came up and got in the movie and told us two acronyms for Ford: Found On Road Dead and Fix Or Repair Daily.

Another high point was at Broad and Tasker when some guy who I'd never seen before when into his house and brought out a book, "Philadelphia Gentlemen" which he told me to return whenever. I have no idea who this guy is. And to return the book I have to ring all the apt doorbells because I don't know his apartment number.
