Philadelphia Local News

Here in the greatest city in the world, Philadelphia, PA, we have a hardcore obsession with local news and newscasters. My dear friend BVSC posted this amazing set of trading cards? head shots? of the Eye on Philadelphia team that you can enjoy by clicking the above link.

Worth noting is the inclusion of Jerry Penacoli, who was actually forced out of Philadelphia following the endless rumors that he had been brought to the emergency room with a gerbil in his rectum. It was an amazing urban legend, right up there with Mikey dying from pop rocks.

Also, Ray Murray is included in this set and I love Ray Murray. I have nothing but great things to say about Ray Murray. My family lived on the same block as Ray Murray for many years and he is a really nice, smart and engaging guy. Totally serious.

Ray was the host of Evening Magazine which is still greatly missed 20 years later.

I, too, dearly miss Evening Magazine, though I take great comfort in the fact that you have the Action News theme song as your phone ring tone.

And the Jerry Penacoli thing....god that was some amazing large-scale group regression.
Please remind me about Ray Murray. I can of course remember his name, but...
and what was the guy's name who everybody loved who died in a skydiving accident? Jim something--?

i so remember the jerry penacoli thing when i was in 4th grade.
what better news for a 4th grader than news involving rodents and butts.
but i found that when i moved to pittsburgh and then subsequently DC many years later, those cities too had news-casters-and-rodents tales.

however, i still think they all copied jerry.

Regarding the Jerry Penacoli "gerbeling" episode a classic joke emerged. Remember the time was the late 1980's

Here goes,

Do you know how the doctors got the gerbil out of Pencoli's rectum?

The used the RAMBO gerbil. It goes in to get the others out!

You should really know someone before you talk about them. The Penacoli rumor is completely false. Why don't you all get a life.

Jim O'brien died in the sky diving accident. "Roz" from "Frazier" is his daughter.
