I-95.08
Here’s what happens on Sunday, May 4 2008 at Front and Mifflin Sts. in Philadelphia, PA. There’s 231 photographs under I-95 from 1PM to 4PM. All of the photos will be up at 1PM.
There’s photos for sale at the table, and maps and photo lists, golf pencils, water and pretzels. Color copies are 5 dollars each, please ask for them by number. Every photo in the show has a number written on the ground in front of the image. If you want to buy a copy, tell the people at the table the number and they’ll get it for you. Working at the table will be Laura, Masha, Charday and Savannah.
Savannah: #1 Sister of all time!
Charday: play niece
Laura: intern from Uarts
Masha: intern from Moore
At 4 when the show is over people are welcome to take the photos from the pilasters. There’s adhesive backing on the photos, so if you think you want to take one bring saran wrap or paper to put on the back. And bring some for other people, too.
For folks who are just wandering in who or don’t know about the maps and photos for sale at the table, please tell them how the show works.
---------
After the I-95 show two years ago, right after I was in the Whitney biennial, I felt that some people didn’t understand that the show wasn’t a “give away,” but rather it’s just that when the show is done the photos are left to the elements and people can take them if they want. I had some consternation regarding how I saw the taking of the photos after the show was done. I did want people to take them if they wanted them… but I wanted someone to take them on the basis of their engagement with the show, not on the promise of a piece of the show having monetary value. However, after that first year when the perceived worth of my photos shifted, I found that when I stepped back I really didn’t care what happened to the photos when it was done, just like from the start. If someone takes a photo it implies engagement, regardless of reason. And of course money is a valid reason… what the hell was I thinking? When it’s over, it’s over, and anything can happen with the images.
There have been very few changes since the project began and most of them were a result of rehashing how the show went the year before and then making minor shifts… like an addition of an hour, it use to be 1pm to 3pm, now it’s 1pm to 4pm. But when I started to sell ink-jet prints, I knew right away that I wanted to make higher quality prints for 95 if I could afford it and decided to make the same archival prints that I sell in the gallery to be laminated for 95. So the photos in the show this year are all archival ink-jet prints, which sell for 750 bucks at my NY gallery. And all but 3 of the 231 images are printed identically to the archival ink-jets that I sell. (I had to settle for a lower res with 3 because I didn’t have the time to rescan) Except, of course, the I-95 photos are laminated with an adhesive backing. When I began this project the images didn’t have monetary value in the art market, now it’s 173,250.00 dollars worth of photos that people can take. But there's no true shift in the worth… it’s the same as it was in the beginning and will be the same at the end; color copies or ink-jets, it’s the complete installation that’s the work and I’m happy to have the pieces of it off in the world, the prints and the copies and the web images and the vinyl and the slide shows.
In some ways, the putting up the images and then letting go of them is how it is with the weather for the day of the show… I can prepare all year for this show but it’s possible that it could rain. And while the installation goes up unless there’s a nuclear holocaust, rain makes putting up the show more difficult and means that a few images would be unable to adhere to the pillars. Too bad, but that’s what this show is. I could work all year and have a fourth of that year’s work slide to the ground, and while I can’t pretend that I wouldn’t be pissed off, I’d start working toward the next year knowing full well that it could happen again.
---------
There’s a lot of reflection in this year’s show, and a lot of mirroring. This year I’m still hashing out some of the sub-themes that have slipped in over the last 7 years; next year should be a much different edit because it will the last edit before the completion of the project.

RIP Edna Andrade: Philadelphia's Finest Op Artist
It is now time for me to obsessively start checking weather
While it's absolutely fine if it's showers on the day of, there are adhesion problems with the center aisle if it's wet, which means I have to move my schedule around. And I need to know about rain non stop for sweeping up and chalking the numbers.

Devastating News Regarding Jersey's #1 Quonset Hut
Photo Credit BONNIE WELLER / Inquirer Staff Photographer
Ideal Clothing is closing in a few weeks. The store, containing racks and racks of marked-down designer clothing, was a regular stop for many on their way to the Jersey Shore.
After I-95 in 2010, I don't know what's happening. I want to revisit some of the ideas that I was interested in exploring before the tsunami of I-95 took over. I want to work more with language, I was looking at the forms of diagrammed sentences and using them in my work. And I definitely want to look at creating the car crash sculpture which I've wanted to produce since my early 20s.
As part of a larger project I want to work on this "portals" idea I had... a live projection of places with the same address. For example 10th and Chestnut here in Philadelphia would have a camera that projected to a monitor at 10th and Chestnut in Topeka, Kansas and the Kansas cam would project here... a constant running look at the same named place thousands miles away.
In a different project, I kind of want to make a map and set up the cameras not just in places with the exact same name, but using an algorithm based on longitude and latitude to figure out corresponding spots around the world, but I don't even know how to convert fractions to decimal points, so I think you know that's going to take a looong time for me to figure out.

I'd also like to revisit Collision at Sea. This photo is from before the boats were pushed together in collision and the "red velvet" rope went up around them.
Here's some other of my work from my mid to late 20s

I painted this across the street from where I lived at 8th and Wharton.

This was a companion piece to "Whirlforce Medical Research Lab" an installation that was in our house at 8th and Wharton. Not to say nothing, but Whirlforce might be my best work to date.

Still true today, folks!

artonpaper diary
In February, Peter from artonpaper magazine invited me to submit a "diary" entry for an upcoming publication, "Diaries of a Young Artist."
"DIARIES is inspired, in part, by another project: artonpaper’s LETTERS TO A YOUNG ARTIST, which was first published in artonpaper in 2005 and consisted of letters from established artists to a fictional young artist (“Dear Young Artist,” they all began) offering advice, guidance, admonishment, and inspiration."
While it was possible to submit an entry that spoke more about the art world and recreate a moment for the book, I chose to write in the moment as if I was actually writing a diary entry. No dates are included in the book, but I kind of wrote this like "Captain's Log, Stardate 2008."
Here's an excerpt and I'll let you know when the book comes out.

April 21, 2008
I’m at Methodist Hospital waiting for my bi-lateral breast ultrasound follow up and can’t believe that I had to schedule it so close to this year’s I-95. I haven’t finished the printing for lamination and am losing it. Right this minute I’m working on the final order for I-95 with a fist full of papers, my laptop and a 3rd cup of coffee, while wearing a paper robe.
However, if I wasn’t so out of my fucking mind with the ordering of the photos, I could have had this done a month ago and could be relaxing and enjoying what’s on waiting room TV… Walker: Texas Ranger. Or maybe my anxiety could be the normal anxiety that women have when waiting to have a mass in their breast checked out, as opposed to the tremendous anxiety that I’m having right now about where to place “Death to the KKK” in relation to “Mattress Flip.” .....
-----
Results were fine, breast healthy, and now I’m at my studio drinking a 4th cup of coffee and printing nonstop.
-----
Look for the rest of the entry when "Letters to a Young Artist" is published.

Worth noting is that if I stopped drinking so much coffee, I probably wouldn't have to have a constant breast checkup. It's pretty direct... "coffee is a major contributor to benign cysts." Whatever.

There's always plenty of reasons to want to be in Dublin
and Steve Powers is now at the top of my list of reasons.

from Steve...
"heres some more of what I've been up to in Dublin. The
phone number is my Irish cell phone number, I got
about 30 calls in 12 hours before I left town for my
son's birthday/christening. my outgoing message says
'Where are you?, I've been looking all over, leave a

Possible 146

This was made this week. Usually I have a strong feeling about new work, and then I go with the work that I had originally slated for the space. But this one might make it.

Greetings from Hollywood, Fl
I am working now through May 4th without stop. Because I have been traveling a lot I am, as usual, behind. These 2 are important photos for this year and I'm still up in the air about which one.

"Christ! What am I doing about my hair?" or "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue"
My hair is so fucking long I don't know what to do. I'm like Crystal Gayle. My dilemma is this; it must be short enough so hair can't blow in front of the lens or it has to be long enough so I can pull it back to keep it from blowing in front of the lens. This is a very real concern for me and it's kept me from getting my hair cut for a long time.
I think I'd like to cut it off in a performance and then braid it and fashion it into a noose, an obvious choice and an homage to 70's feminist works and their relevance to today. Or I might just get it cut.

Unbelievable News: Sisters together in MIAMI, FLA!

I called my sister to ask for a ride to the airport and when she called back she said she couldn't pick me up because she had just flown down to MIami to see her grandmother. OK, and I was flying to Miami. Please be aware that I talk to my sister ALL THE TIME AND NEITHER OF US KNEW THE OTHER WAS GOING TO BE IN MIAMI! UNBELIEVABLE!

Above is a record of the meet up of jetsetting sisters in Miami. HOW GREAT IS THIS?
I'll answer; IT'S SO GREAT!
Also, my sister is the greatest sister of all time. I love her so much!

Boring Photos by Zoe Strauss
Here are photos I am compelled to make even though they are tremendously boring. They never have any intent past the making of them... they're not for show. So why do I make them? I DON'T KNOW!
Is it a flowering tree on an overcast day? And is my fill flash working? Hello, there goes a waste of at least half an hour of that day.

-----
Is something flying over head? I am as captivated as old people and kids at a construction site. Airplane? Helicopter? Bird? Balloon? Sure! I also use moving flying things as a sort of training... can I assess what's happening, adjust the camera, and make a shot within a few seconds? But then I end up with 10 shots of a escaped balloon. What's the point? I don't know, but I can't stop myself.

Why do I have to make these? I DON'T KNOW!

Not sure which one I'm going with. I saw this woman, Virginia, in the parking lot of the Philadelphia Outlet Stores, an outlet mall that just opened in Limerick. I walked up to her car and asked if she would drive around to the other side of the mall and let me take her photo in front of the cooling towers. She said, "sure, but I only have 10 minutes before work," and followed me around to the other side. The way she posed was so amazing and the fact that we didn't even talk about where the photos would go... it was crazy. It turns out she had modeled once before, for Torrid at the Montgomery mall. She knew why I wanted to make her photo there and she was beautiful and self-confident. I told her to email me for the photos, which I really hope she does, and then she went off to work at The Children's Place. Virginia, you are great.

The Story of Christian Dicicco and South Philly's State Rep Race
A few years ago there was tremendous rainstorm that flooded many of the basements in Philadelphia, particularly in South Philly. My studio was flooded and I lost a tremendous amount, including a library that I'd worked on collecting for almost 10 years.
I wasn't sure what I was going to do, because I had been renting from a friend for cheap and I was at the point where I knew I couldn't work in the house. Word around the neighborhood was that properties owned by Citizens Alliance on Passyunk Ave could be rented for very little, so I headed over to their office and met with Christian Dicicco, who was working for Vince Fumo at the time. Citizens Alliance is a neighborhood group that fills in where the city fails, they clean and provide upkeep for our pretty dense neighborhood. Of course, they had been under federal investigation for using funds to send the former head of Citizen's Alliance on a trip to Cuba with Vince Fumo. Please. There was some crazy shit going on with the old director, but she got the boot. Hellooooo! This is South Philly.
Anyway, Christian offered me the use of 1540 E. Passyunk for free while the Ave. was getting shaped up. I had explained about the flood and about I-95 and he said get right the hell in. It's important to note that I was not fancy at all then. I was just some lady from up the block. Why did Christian offer me use of the space? Because he wanted the storefront with someone there instead of vacant. And he understood the I-95 project and why I was working on it. And because he knew that I know how to sweep up outside and how I really want the neighborhood to be the greatest neighborhood on earth... all of South Philly. I will always be grateful for the use of that space.
So I've known Christian for a few years now and, as far as I know, he's a good guy. He's running for State Rep here and I'm voting for him. Not just because of the studio... I mean, I am a loyal gal and will never forget it; he had a genuine interest in helping the arts in South Philly and helping someone who he didn't know continue her work based on good faith, a strong plan and neighborhood commitment.
Actually I'm voting for Christian based on the looming threat of a casino coming to Delaware and Reed... A casino being built at Delaware and Reed is possibly one of the stupidest fucking things I've ever heard of. Christian is strenuously opposed to a casino in the proposed location. South Philly's current rep, Bill Keller, voted for the original legislation that approved slots gambling in Pennsylvania, with 2 slots parlors slated for Philadelphia. Then, he voted for the amended version of SB 862, a bill that aimed at lining up casinos on Pennsylvania’s riverfronts. The amended version of the legislation was opposed by almost all Philadelphia legislators because it stripped the city of its power to determine the zoning for the casinos and handed it over to the state. And now we're looking at an uphill battle to keep Foxwoods out of our neighborhood.
For real, a casino that would come to Reed St. would destroy Pennsport.

Rocky Flats Survivors 5/03/07
I'm going to be posting more about Rocky Flats and working my ass off on this project. Later, I will call on all investigative journalists, oncologists, documentary filmmakers, union organizers, patrons of the arts, former nuke workers, and any and all rat-killing lawyers, Philadelphia lawyers and crackerjack lawyers to help out. Get ready to get called if you are even tangentially connected to any of those occupations.
However, I am trying to take a day off to decompress. Today is my birthday and it's also Clifford Smith aka Method Man's birthday. I am one year older than Method Man but we're going to hold it down for all the early 1970's April 1st birthdays.

Doug Deforge's Parents

Cliff and Sharon Delforge
The photo on the chair is a photo of Doug Delforge, who died from brain cancer about 6 weeks ago. Both Doug and his father Cliff worked at Rocky Flats... Cliff worked at Rocky Flats for 35 years as a monitor.
Here is an excerpt from a letter Cliff Delforge wrote to Shelby Hallmark, the Department of Labor deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Workers' Compensation Programs.
March 3, 2008
"...I am formally requesting that I be given a written explanation regarding the various aspects of (Doug Delforge's) claim.
First, why is it that it took 5 years for the panel of doctors to accept the claim? The evidence that my son's illness had a direct relationship to the ionizing radiation exposure he received due to the work he performed at Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Production Facility was readily available and had been in existence since the early 1950's. Why?
It is totally inconceivable that the panel of "experts" could not find in 5 years what it took me, a total novice in the area of brain tumors, less than 30 minutes to find the initial information, and 5 hours to find the total body of evidence that I presented to the Department of Labor (DOL) panel. These people had the power of the United States government at their disposal and had to have had access to more sophisticated data bases that the world wide web, which I used. I would like to know exactly which data bases they did use, as I would like to study them myself to determine why there were apparently no references to the relationship between ionizing radiation (I.R.) and meningioma.
I can only think of two reasons why the panel of doctors would be unable to make the connection between I.R. and meningioma.
1. That the doctors on the panel were totally incompetent to make accurate judgements in the area of brain tumors and failed to make any attempt to educate themselves in the matter, in which case their behavior would be shameful.
2. That the doctors were competent to make these judgements and had knowledge of the connection between I.R. and meningioma and simply refused to accept the claim even when they knew it to be valid. If this is the case, then their behavior is, in my opinion, criminal. "
------
It's criminal either way.
It took me less than 2 minutes to look up information that would lead me to primary sources indicating ionizing radiation exposure caused brain tumors. Hello?
